Managing Shipping Containers With Health And Safety In Mind
1st October 2021

If you've ever looked at a set of shipping containers and compared it to a game of Tetris, you wouldn't be entirely far from the truth. Thankfully, though, stacking up rows and rows of shipping containers in the real world shouldn't make them disappear, but that depends on whether or not you're able to stack them correctly. If you're trying to manage your shipping containers in a way that isn't going to present a health and safety risk to every employee on site, we might be able to help.

Give It The Once Over Before You Put It In Place
Getting a damaged container out from the middle of a stack is never going to be an easy undertaking, so it's best that you inspect the containers thoroughly before it physically become nigh-impossible to do so. You'll want to make sure there are no cracks or dents appearing on the outer structure of the container, and that the sides, sub-flooring and corner posts are all free of any sign of wear or damage. If you do find any damage, you'll need to repair it before the container can be put into the stack, so make sure you don't skip through the check lightly. While this structural damage can be significant, the major threat to many shipping containers can actually be rust, thanks to the weeks and months these containers can spend at sea. Rust can appear on both the inside and the outside of the container, and if it cannot be repaired, the entire container will need to be replaced.

Layer Them Corner To Corner
When you're stacking the shipping containers, whether you're using forklifts or cranes, you'll want to make sure the corners are as perfectly aligned with one another as is possible. The four corner posts of a shipping container can provide stability to the containers above it, so stacking them in such a way as the corners are atop one another is a great way to make sure the stack doesn't come crashing down at the worst possible moment.

If you've got containers of multiple sizes, you'll want to put the smaller containers at the bottom of the stack and the larger ones at the top. While this may seem counter-intuitive, the base will provide more stability this way, which means the single container on top is less likely to slide off than a single one would have been.
