What are the Functions of a Warehouse?
16th December 2022

A warehouse is a facility where goods are stored for a temporary period of time. When different products or items reach you or your departmental store from another city, they seldom come to you directly from the place of production. Even the things that are produced locally are stored in warehouses for short durations.

On average, there are three to four different warehouses where a product would be stored before it reaches its destination. They are way more critical in the functioning of our economy than we realise. To understand this better, we list below five crucial functions of a warehouse.

Storage

A warehouse's first and primary role is to store the goods adequately. This entails the warehouse equipment to load and unload the goods, such as trolleys, forklifts, and other similar tools, keeping the goods systematically, and making sure that no boxes get damaged while transferring from one point to another. Naturally, this is not a simple task to perform. It requires a lot of organisational skills and an understanding of the warehousing facility.

Protection

Goods need to be stored in a storage facility to get protection from many natural agents. These can be from harsh sun, heavy rains, storms, dust, moisture, and so on. Moreover, they also need protection from moulding, mildew, and rusting, which a good warehouse can provide.

Reducing price fluctuations and unnecessary inflations

A warehouse plays a very crucial role in maintaining the balance between the demand and supply of goods. A warehouse stores goods when the need for them decreases so that they can be used soon. When the demand for goods rises, the warehouse acts as an excellent tool to keep up with that influx in the market. Also, when the demand and supply are both very high, the goods are kept safely in the warehouse to ensure that the business owners do not suffer massive losses.

Excessive storage of goods leads to a rise in inflation. Therefore, warehouses also control inflation by keeping the outflow of goods in motion.

Movement of freight

The location of warehouses is usually closer to ports, stations or areas where road freights are readily available such as highways. Therefore, warehouses are places for intercity storage, making long-distance transportation of goods convenient.

Taking responsibility

The goods are the responsibility of the warehouse owner. The maintenance, storage facilities, and workers hired are all crucial to the reputation of the warehouse. If anything were to happen to the goods, the onus would fall on the owner.

As seen from the above points, a warehouse has multiple functions that go beyond being only a storage facility.
